A Physical Therapist is an expectant mother’s best friend!

Apr 1, 2009  Pregnancy is a time of anticipation and excitement for most expectant mothers. Unfortunately, many women experience aches and pains which are often viewed as just a part of pregnancy. Many physicians do not realize how physical therapy can help their patients have a happy, healthy and pain-free pregnancy.

Physical Therapists can offer relief to expectant mothers because they are specialists in the musculo-skeletal system and movement. They are able to assess a woman’s spinal alignment and presentation of pain, and determine the most effective forms of treatment so the patient can enjoy a pain-free pregnancy.

The most common complaints from pregnant women are low back pain, hip pain and sacro-iliac pain. The sacro-iliac region of the body is commonly known as the buttocks and low back. Often, women complain of pain in these areas early in the pregnancy before they gain any weight or experience any postural changes. This is because with pregnancy, hormonal changes in the blood cause a relaxation in ligaments and muscles. This normal change is necessary for labor and delivery, but happens as soon as a woman becomes pregnant.

Physical Therapists work to correct these painful conditions by using safe manual therapy techniques such as stretching, massage, and muscle energy practices. These treatments combined with patient education on proper posture and body mechanics can positively affect how a woman looks and feels throughout her entire pregnancy.

If you are experiencing any discomfort during pregnancy, please call your doctor or a Moore physical therapist and schedule an appointment.

Research has demonstrated that physical therapy is an effective treatment for the symptoms of Urinary Incontinence.

February 9, 2009   Urinary Incontinence (UI), or involuntary loss of bladder control, isn’t something that just happens to older patients. It affects up to one-quarter of American Women both young and old, leaving them feeling ashamed, socially isolated, and depressed.

Physical Therapists are crucial in treating UI because of their role in both assessing and treating musculoskeletal conditions. A variety of methods can be used to help correct pelvic floor dysfunction. An individualized exercise treatment program is developed following an initial evaluation to determine the scope, and type of incontinence.

Exercises called kegel exercises, that involve contracting, holding and releasing pelvic floor muscles are a very effective treatment for the control of UI. Kegel exercises can be done while sitting at your desk, driving, or at the gym. No special equipment is needed, and it is easy for patients to maintain their privacy about treatment for UI.

If you are currently experiencing bladder problems or pelvic pain please let us at Moore PT help. Christine Miceli, MSPT is trained in the evaluation and treatment of Urinary Incontinence, and can help you learn how to manage your condition, or in some cases regain complete continence.

Women's Health Testimonial

This was my first experience with physical therapy and the therapy was top notch.  I came to Moore after an onset of female bladder issues for which surgery was recommended. I also  had a painful disc issue in my neck.  After treatment at Moore and exercises given to me to do at home, surgery has been averted.  PT really works!
